The Mayo coastline covers around 700 km with a variety of different angling possibilities. From sandy beaches to steep clifs, off-shore islands, estuaries, rocky shores and off-shore reefs. Almost 50 different species can be caught regular from these waters. It is wise to get local advise on where best to fish, on what species and with what bait. Good information can also be found on www.sea-angling-ireland.org. There are boats from different harbours which can take you out fishing in Clew bay, around the islands, the Moy estuary and in the Atlantic Ocean.
Just to name a few species that you can catch from the shore: Pollock, Coalfish, Wrasse, Dogfish, Ray, Mackerel, Bull huss, Flounder, Turbot, Mullet, Conger and many others.
From the boat you catch species such as, Gurnard, Tope, Skate, Ling, Monkfish, Cod any many others.
We at Eurocottage can help you with boat-reservations, advise on Tackle shops etc.
The main angling area's are briefly decribed below:
CLEW BAY:
A large bay with many islands which includes Westport, Newport and part of Achill island. This bay is famous for its big Skate, but habours many other species. From the cliffs, sandy beaches, piers and rocks there is good fishing.
Achill Island
Again many species can be caught from rocks and cliffs around the island, but also from the strand at Keem. Purteen Harbour is good for Mullet, but also Wrasse, Pollock and Coalfish.
Belmullet
It seperates 2 great bays, Broadhave to the North and Blacksod to the South. From here also Shark and Tuna can be caught.
Killala
This is an ancient town marked by a Round tower more than 1000 years old. Angling includes the Bay and the moy estuary. This place is well know for spinning for Sea-Trout, but again many other species can be caught from boats and shore. |
